# John Sherman

**John Sherman** (May 10, 1823 – October 22, 1900) was a [United States](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) politician from [Ohio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio) throughout the [American Civil War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War) and into the late nineteenth century. A member of the [Republican Party](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_Party_\(United_States\)), he served in both houses of the [U.S. Congress](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Congress). He also served as [Secretary of the Treasury](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Secretary_of_the_Treasury) and [Secretary of State](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Secretary_of_State). Sherman sought the Republican presidential nomination three times, coming closest [in 1888](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1888_Republican_National_Convention), but was never chosen by the party.
