Adina Labs Works with Macquarie University Students on Carbon Market Research

This semester, Adina Labs is working with a cohort of students from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia on a research question at the center of one of our planned ventures. The students, enrolled in an International Business unit, are examining which international markets a verification-first carbon credit trading platform should enter first, and why. Adina Labs is the industry case study for the unit.

Why a carbon credit exchange

Adina Labs started with hiring because it is a market where trust has become harder to establish than it should be. A qualification, a job title, a work history. These are simple facts, but confirming them still takes phone calls, references, and a degree of faith. As the number of applications per role has climbed, that faith has been replaced by automated screening, with the human out of the loop and genuine candidates screened out of roles they were suited for.

Carbon markets have the same problem. When a company buys a carbon credit, it is buying a claim that somewhere a tonne of emissions was avoided or removed. The buyer rarely sees the project, cannot check the measurement, and has no easy way of knowing whether the same tonne has already been sold to someone else. So the whole market rests on intermediaries saying trust us, which is the arrangement Adina Labs exists to replace.

The fix looks the same as it does in hiring. Someone accountable verifies the claim, a tamper-proof record of that verification is written on-chain, and from then on any buyer can confirm the credit is genuine without needing to see the paperwork or take anyone's word for it. That is the model our global research and development team is scoping for a carbon credit exchange.

What the students are doing

Over the semester, running from August to November, the cohort is researching regulatory environments, existing exchange structures, buyer demand, and verification standards across markets, and building a case for where a new platform should start.

This is a real market entry question for a platform on the Adina Labs roadmap, not a hypothetical exercise. Our team is working closely with the student groups throughout the semester, sharing context on the platform, answering their questions, and giving them access to the people scoping the venture. In return, we get a fresh, independent perspective on where the exchange should begin.

The students will present their recommendations in their final assessment in November. Once the unit is complete, we will share a summary of what they found and how it has shaped our thinking.
