Embarking on a startup journey can be an exciting, rewarding, and challenging experience. However, not all startup stories end in success. Sometimes, circumstances force us to make difficult decisions, like leaving behind a project we were once passionate about. In this blog post, I'll share my personal experience of walking away from a previous startup due to a toxic work environment, and the importance of prioritizing mental health.

1. Disagreements on Founder Salaries: One of the primary challenges my co-founder and I faced was our inability to agree on founder salaries. This disagreement stemmed from differing expectations and priorities, leading to tension and conflict within the company.

2. Board Structure and Lack of Control: My co-founder structured the board in a way that made it impossible for me to advocate for change. This left me feeling powerless and frustrated, as I was unable to influence decisions that directly impacted my well-being and the future of the company.

3. Co-founder's Shift in Attitude: When I shared the news that I was expecting a child, my co-founder's attitude took a turn for the worse. This change in demeanor added to the already strained relationship, and made it even more challenging to navigate our disagreements.

4. Emotional Abuse and Gaslighting: Over time, my co-founder's behavior became emotionally abusive, resorting to gaslighting and manipulation. This toxic environment took a toll on my mental health, as I began to question my own reality and capabilities.

5. The Importance of Mental Health and Self-Preservation: Ultimately, I made the difficult decision to leave the startup for the sake of my mental health. While it was painful to walk away from something I had invested so much time and energy into, I knew that prioritizing my well-being was the right choice.

Conclusion: Leaving a toxic startup environment can be a challenging and emotional decision, but it's crucial to prioritize our mental health and well-being above all else. In my experience, walking away from a damaging situation allowed me to regain control of my life, and provided me with the opportunity to grow and thrive in a healthier, more supportive environment.

By sharing my story, I hope to encourage others to recognize the signs of a toxic work environment and to take the necessary steps to protect their mental health. Remember, it's okay to prioritize yourself and your well-being – you deserve a supportive and nurturing work environment where you can truly thrive.
