# Baby boom

A **baby boom** is a period marked by a significant increase of [birth rate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birth_rate). This [demographic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography) phenomenon is usually [ascribed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascribed_characteristics) within certain [geographical](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography) bounds of defined [national](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationality) and [cultural](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture) populations. People born during these periods are often called [baby boomers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_boomer). The cause of baby booms involves various [fertility factors](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fertility_factor_\(demography\)). The [best-known baby boom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-20th_century_baby_boom) occurred in the mid-twentieth century, sometimes considered to have started after the end of the [Second World War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_World_War), sometimes from the late 1930s, and ending in the 1960s
