# Web3 Social Networks

I see two main approaches to building in web3 social: asset-first or ideology-first.

In [Issue 1 of our Variant newsletter](https://www.variantnewsletter.com/p/issue-1-thinking-about-web3-social) last week, I championed the asset-first approach. But I like to think through all sides of an argument, and I think there is also an alternate path for web3 social networks to be successful. So below, I try to make the case for and the case against financializing web3 social networks.
