EigenLayer reported a serious incident where a "malicious attacker" hijacked the transfer of $5.5 million worth of its tokens. Initially intended for a legitimate recipient, the funds were mistakenly sent to the attacker, who quickly converted them into stablecoins and moved them to centralized exchanges.

The protocol has confirmed that a compromised email thread led to this error, and law enforcement has already frozen some of the stolen funds. EigenLayer is investigating the matter, noting there’s no vulnerability in their system and imposing a sales freeze on EIGEN tokens for current and former employees until September 2025. Despite the turmoil, EIGEN’s price saw a slight increase, currently sitting at $3.22.
