# MATIC to POL

Polygon is migrating MATIC tokens to POL starting September 4 as part of a major upgrade. This move, aimed at transforming Polygon into a "network of networks," will see MATIC tokens phased out in favor of POL, which will serve as the native asset for gas fees and staking.

The transition was tested on July 17 to preempt any issues. Holders on Polygon’s PoS blockchain will have their MATIC tokens automatically upgraded to POL, while others may need to take steps like updating wallet settings or using decentralized exchanges.

There’s no set deadline for the migration yet, but the community may decide on one in the future.
