# Spawn 136 | Comic Review By [Avalost](https://paragraph.com/@avalost) · 2025-05-13 spawn, toddmcfarlane --- \[English version below\] Es ist wieder der Moment gekommen, an dem wir uns an dieser Stelle mit **Spawn** beschäftigen wollen. „**Spawn 136**“ ist am Start und versammelt die US-Ausgaben 354 bis 357. Wie gehabt, im handlichen Softcover-Taschenbuch aus dem Hause **Panini**. Kurze Auffrischung: Die große Schlacht um den Thron der Hölle kam zu einem Ende und anstelle von **Cogliostro**, dem **Clown**/**Violator**, **Spawn** oder irgendeinem Mitbewerber aus dem Himmel hat sich **Nyx** der Sache angenommen. Mit dem Ergebnis, dass sowohl die Krieger der Hölle (inklusive der Hellspawns) als auch die Soldaten des Himmels zumindest auf der Erde ihrer Kräfte beraubt wurden. Sie sind allesamt nur noch normale Sterbliche – und somit exakt das. Sterblich. Und das mitunter ziemlich schnell. Jeder aus einer Waffe abgefeuerte Schuss könnte der finale Fangschuss sein. Auch für **Al Simmons**, der aber immerhin den Vorteil hat, in seinem früheren Leben Söldner gewesen zu sein. Inmitten dieses Gewusels wittern die Vampire unter der Herrschaft von **Mr. Bludd** Morgenluft. In dem Moment, in dem wir hier in die Handlung einsteigen, ist **Spawn** mit einer jungen Frau namens **Lyra** unterwegs. Überraschenderweise ist **Lyra** nicht vom spontanen Schwund aller übernatürlichen Fähigkeiten betroffen. Tatsächlich kann sie nach wie vor austeilen wie einst im Mai. Wie kann das sein, fragt Ihr? Berechtigte Frage, um deren Beantwortung sich die aktuelle Ausgabe von „**Spawn**“ auch nicht lange drückt. **Lyra** ist ein Hybridwesen. Will sagen: Die Mutter war eine Top-Soldatin der Hölle, während der Vater sich seine Brötchen (oder was auch immer dort oben so serviert wird) im Himmel verdiente. Irgendwann landeten die Beiden in der Kiste, Liebe machen diesdas, und am Ende ist dieser Liebelei ein Kind entsprungen: **Lyra**. Und weil das eine ziemlich fetzige Angelegenheit ist, in einer Welt voller Superwesen ohne Superkräfte noch mit ebendiesen ausgestattet zu sein, hat **Jason Wynn** ein brennendes Interesse daran, **Lyra** in seine Finger zu bekommen. Und es sieht ganz danach aus, als sei **Lyra** nicht die einzige Person, die hybrid unterwegs ist. Nur dass die nächste Person, von der wir erfahren, ihre Lohntüte offenbar von **Jason Wynn** kassiert … Ich muss schon sagen, dieser Quasi-Reboot, der **Al Simmons** (und mit ihm alle anderen **Spawns**) kraft- aber nicht machtlos hat werden lassen, fetzt schon. Das ist genau die Sorte frischer Wind, den die inzwischen ja doch in die Jahre gekommene Serie von **Todd McFarlane** gebrauchen konnte. Ich gebe mich nicht der Illusion hin, dass sich „**Spawn**“ irgendwann wieder in einen apokalyptischen Konflikt zwischen Himmel und Hölle hochjazzen wird. Im Moment aber versprüht die Serie für mich den (zugegeben) unwiderstehlichen Charme der frühen Tage. Als „**Spawn**“ noch neu war und anders und ganz aufregend. Auch die sensationellen Zeichnungen von **Brett Booth**, ganz im Stil und der Tradition des Serienschöpfers, tragen unfassbar viel zu diesem Eindruck bei. Gut gefallen hat mir an dieser Ausgabe überdies, dass man sich viel Zeit für die Hintergrundgeschichte von Lyra genommen hat. **Al Simmons** ist zwar auch irgendwie da, aber die Bühne gehört eindeutig der jungen Frau. Das wiederum erinnert mich ein wenig an „**Spawn: The Undead**“, erschienen um die Jahrtausendwende und geschrieben von **Paul Jenkins**. Eine Serie, in der **Spawn** auch eher eine Randfigur war. Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn: „**Spawn 136**“ ist vergnügliche und kurzweilige Unterhaltung, von der sich guten Gewissens behaupten lässt: Die Richtung stimmt. Kann gerne so weitergehen. * * * It's that time again—time to dive back into the world of _Spawn_. Issue #136 is out now, collecting US issues #354 to #357. As usual, it comes in a handy softcover trade paperback edition from **Panini**. A quick refresher: the epic battle for the throne of Hell has come to an end. And instead of **Cogliostro**, the **Clown**/**Violator**, **Spawn**, or any heavenly contender taking the crown, it’s **Nyx** who has stepped up. The result? Both the warriors of Hell (including the Hellspawns) and the soldiers of Heaven have lost their powers—at least on Earth. They’re now nothing more than ordinary mortals. And as mortals tend to be: vulnerable. A single bullet can now mean a permanent end. That includes **Al Simmons**—though his former life as a mercenary still gives him a bit of an edge. Amidst this chaos, the vampires under the rule of **Mr. Bludd** begin to sense opportunity. At the point where we pick up the story, **Spawn** is traveling with a young woman named **Lyra**. Surprisingly, **Lyra** seems unaffected by the sudden disappearance of supernatural powers. In fact, she can still throw down like it's 1999. How is that possible, you ask? A fair question—and one that this issue of _Spawn_ doesn’t take long to answer. **Lyra** is a hybrid. Her mother was a top-tier soldier of Hell; her father earned his celestial paycheck upstairs in Heaven. At some point, the two ended up in bed together—love, romance, you know the drill—and the result of that union is **Lyra**. And in a world full of superpowered beings now stripped of their powers, being one of the few who _still_ has them is a pretty big deal. Naturally, **Jason Wynn** is very interested in getting his hands on her. And it looks like Lyra might not be the only hybrid out there. The next one we meet seems to already be on **Wynn’s** payroll … I have to say, this quasi-reboot—where **Al Simmons** and the rest of the **Spawns** lose their powers but not their purpose—really works for me. It's exactly the kind of fresh air a long-running series like _Spawn_ needs. I’m under no illusion that the series will one day explode back into a full-blown apocalyptic war between Heaven and Hell. But for now, it radiates the kind of (admittedly irresistible) charm the series had in its early days—when _Spawn_ still felt new, different, and genuinely exciting. The absolutely stunning artwork by **Brett Booth**, very much in the spirit and tradition of creator **Todd McFarlane**, goes a long way in reinforcing that feeling. I also really appreciated how much space was given to **Lyra’s** backstory in this volume. Sure, **Al Simmons** is still around, but the spotlight clearly belongs to this young woman. That, in turn, reminded me a bit of _Spawn: The Undead_, the short-lived series from around the turn of the millennium written by **Paul Jenkins**, where **Spawn** often took a backseat. Long story short: _Spawn 136_ delivers entertaining, fast-paced fun—and it’s safe to say, the series is heading in the right direction.
