# BASE JOINS THE OPTIMISM GOVERNANCE

On August 24th, Base put up a post (written by Jesse) on @OptimismGov discourse about Base's participation in its governance. What is Base? Base is a Layer 2 chain that offers a safe, low-cost, developer-friendly way to build on-chain. It is an L2 built on Optimism Stack. On February 23, 2023, Base Chain was announced along with its testnet launch. Aug. 9, Base officially launched its mainnet to end users after months of testnet with builders and users on-chain. Alongside the launch, they also launched an event called Onchain Summer; providing its users with several on-chain activities throughout the month of August. The on-chain summer kickstarts Base's vision to bring the next millions of builders and Billions of users on-chain. On August 24th, Base put up a post (written by Jesse) on Optimism governance discourse about Base's participation in Optimism governance. As Base is part of the Optimism SuperChain, contributing to the OP governance is vital. Let us dive in. In a nutshell, Base will be actively engaging in Optimism governance to ensure the stability and integrity of the OP Stack and Superchain. They're also contributing to the creation of the Law of Chains 2, which establishes the foundation for defining the Superchain and supporting public goods funding. Base's involvement includes joining the Optimism Collective and committing 15% of net revenue to fund public goods. They can earn up to 2.75% of the OP token supply over six years, emphasizing active and accountable governance. Their voting power will be limited to 9% of the total votable supply to uphold decentralization.
