Spam and bots have always plagued social platforms, and Farcaster is no exception. Algorithmic feed curation is sensitive to manipulation through baits, giveaways, and FUD. This is why dedicated human curation, beyond cast interactions, is essential for maintaining the quality of the feeds. However, human curators are not without their own biases and potential for abuse. This is why we can't have nice things.The Challenge of Tipping as a Curation ToolTipping has emerged as a potential method for curation and in theory, it incentivizes quality content. In practice, however, tipping can be misused for personal gain (I'm looking at you Mr Degen Giveaway), failing to promote honest and effective curation. This leads to a crucial question: Who will watch the watchmen?Strategies for Honest CurationProtocol-level SolutionsCuration (Tipping) Manifesto: Protocols can establish a clear and transparent set of guidelines for curation. This manifesto can outline the principles and practices expected of all curators. (One interesting implication of establishing a manifesto or strict tipping guidelines is that it can serve as a distinguishing factor between different protocols.) Elect Curator's Watchmen/Trust Protectors: Select a group of trusted individuals to monitor and evaluate the top curators (e.g., the top 100 users by tip allocation). These watchmen will ensure adherence to the manifesto. Delegate Tip Allocations: Allow users to delegate their tipping power to trusted curators, promoting accountability and trust within the community.App Builder InitiativesRating and Rewarding Honest Curators: Develop tools that enable users to rate curators based on their honesty and effectiveness. Reward top-rated curators to incentivize quality curation. Tools for Curator's Watchmen: Create tools that allow watchmen to assess tipping behavior and other curator activities.User ActionsFollow Trusted Curators: Users should follow curators who consistently provide valuable content and adhere to the curation manifesto.
