Sardis

Sardis was the capital of the ancient kingdom of [Lydia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lydia)

the seat of a [proconsul](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proconsul) under the [Roman Empire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Empire), and the metropolis of the province Lydia in later Roman and [Byzantine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_Empire) times.

As one of the [seven churches of Asia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_churches_of_Asia), it was addressed by [Jesus Christ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_Christ) as relayed to [John of Patmos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_Patmos), author of the [Book of Revelation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Revelation) in the [New Testament](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Testament).

Sardis is famous in history as the place where modern money was invented. They discovered the secret of separating gold from silver.
