# Earth Day

[This tradition which began in 1970 following the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969_Santa_Barbara_oil_spill#Earth_Day). Each occasion is accompanied by a theme. In recent history:

*   2020: Climate Action
    
*   2021: Restore our Earth
    
*   2022: Invest in our Planet
    

The **_Invest in our Planet_** theme is continued in 2023. Importantly, this year beckons **Accountability**.

If **Accountability** is indeed what we require, then there can be **_no better impetus for the widespread adoption_** of Blockchain/**Distributed Ledger Technology**.

Ethereum’s Smart Contract platform employs **Triple-Entry Accounting** to simultaneously and synchronously (across network nodes) verify the **_crediting_**, **_debiting_**, and **_auditing_** of transactions.

Whereas the **Bitcoin** network pioneered this breakthrough by facilitating **Peer-to-Peer Value Exchange**, **_Ethereum_** network innovated upon this by pairing the Peer-to-Peer Exchange of Value with the **_Peer-to-Peer Execution of Contracts_**.

### Smart Contracts Enforce Accountability
