Powered the Art Block Engine, Sotheby’s looking to start its own curation of Generative Art drops centered around spotlighting and storytelling around each project. Storytelling in Generative Art is an interesting idea for deriving thematic cohesion out of 0s and 1s since 1965. How do you explain that given lines of code that output an image are considered “art” when no “art tools” were used in the process? On top of that, many times, the abstraction of the output is so random that it seems unintentional. This secondary point however introduces the opportunity for storytelling in my opinion. The opportunity to curate - With an enormous amount of outcomes from the code, synergies can be made with the original artist to alter the code and identify outputs that gel under a theme. This is different from Generative AI art which is only prompt-driven without the ability to change the code.Aesthetics of the weekI came across this artist a couple of weeks ago on IG and I love his toned-down yet bold use of color/highlights. Check out JMizu on Instagram.Chaotic ExplorationsThis week we explore the world of Written NFTs.Mirror Writing NFTsAnother project launched on Optimism - Mirror is allowing users to create article-based NFTs. Complete with Cover Art, creators can tie in text-based content into the metadata of the NFT.Gentei KaijouTazuki, who is half-android, has always wanted to get into art but due to her machine identity, she was often criticized as not having the ability to have an “artistic” identity/relationship with the outcome. She struggled to share with others how what she produces doesn’t actually have an emotional evocation. We brought her here to share that story today now that she feels a lot more comfortable today. “Storytelling in Generative Art” - Tazuki “Generative art code can be used to tell stories by leveraging its dynamic and unpredictable nature to create narrative elements. Here are a few approaches you can take:Visual Metaphors: Use generative art to create visual metaphors that represent different aspects of a story. For example, you can use evolving shapes, colors, or patterns to symbolize emotions, character development, or plot progression.Interactive Narratives: Combine generative art with user interactivity to create interactive narratives. Allow users to influence the generative elements, and let the changes in the artwork reflect different story outcomes or branching narratives. The user's actions could shape the visual representation of the story.Dynamic Storytelling: Utilize the dynamic nature of generative art to depict the story's evolution over time. Design algorithms that modify the visual elements based on the story's progression, such as changing colors, shapes, or positions. Each iteration of the artwork can represent a different scene or moment in the story.Textual Integration: Combine generative visuals with textual elements to enhance the storytelling. For instance, you can use generative art as a background or context for text-based narratives, or generate visuals based on specific passages or keywords in the story.Data-Driven Narratives: Use generative art code to visualize data related to the story, such as character interactions, plot points, or emotional arcs. Representing data visually can provide new perspectives and help the audience understand the story from different angles.Animated Storytelling: Animate the generative art to create dynamic and captivating visuals that tell a story. Use motion, transitions, and transformations to depict narrative events, character movements, or changes in the story's mood.Remember, the key is to use generative art as a tool to enhance and support the storytelling process.
