# Compute over Content By [BlueBird Labs](https://paragraph.com/@bluebird-labs) · 2022-03-28 --- At BlueBird Labs, we are building the 1st blockchain based “Compute over Content” infrastructure solution and licensing platform to **power the future of Web3 digital content minting, licensing** **and attribution.** Our unique tech **mints content assets directly “On-chain,”** through Dfinity’s Internet Computer, enabling a new standard for “Content Composability,” ownership security and creative control. **Why Now?** In a web3 world, where the explosion of NFT platforms and projects have gone to the moon, we are still at the infancy of what is possible with content living on-chain. Currently, NFT’s and or any other content is primarily static and unable to change. Aside from a few projects that have figured out complicated work-arounds to putting various elements of their NFT’s on-chain and then aggregate/merge the elements via off-chain algorithms (Avastar, CyberBrookers, Autoglyphs), we are ignoring fundamental issues that prevent the ecosystem from moving fully away from Web2 services and reaching it’s full potential. There exists a massive gap in infrastructure available to meet the needs of new web3 platforms, projects and teams, while legacy Web2 platforms are highly centralized and unfair to the creators and users. The traditional ad-based models of Web2 has created an imbalance of control, flexibility and walled gardens of user data, where both the user and content contributor are taken advantage of for their data and revenue generation. The platforms take all the data and a large portion of revenue generated to build enterprise value, keeping the spoils to themselves. **The Problem with Current Minting** \*Minting Links, not Assets (Reliance on Web2 Infrastructure): \*Current minting on Ethereum or other chains does not mint the actual asset on-chain, rather you are minting just a link to that asset, which is then hosted on AWS or IPFS. This is where you get web3 cynics critical of the hype as the infrastructure for the “Metaverse” is still highly reliant on Web2 services _“On-chain” Content Storage is Impractical / Impossible:_ This is do to incredibly high costs, gas fees and the amount of time it would take to upload the full image. It is estimated that uploading 1GB of data to Ethereum would cost $800k and on Solana $350k. It was said on a recent podcast that CyberBrookers spent 91 ETH to mint their NFT’s on-chain. This is highly prohibitive when it comes to replacing social platforms or services focused on content creation, publishing or images (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.) How can Web3 replace these services if they don’t have reasonable storage infrastructure? \*Inability to Layer Computation over Content: \*The result of this static minting is an inability to make the NFT’s or content dynamic or functional outside of using as solely a profile pic. Additionally, this make true protection of ownership and rights management difficult and forced to move off-chain. Until content lives on-chain, the ability to track attribution, royalties and activity will have to be provided by off-chain centralized systems. **The BlueBird Mission** Through our minting and filter tech, we aim to enable any creator, content owner, NFT project, DAO or web3 dapp with the ability to layer “Computation” capabilities and or creative/utility filters over digital assets such as an NFT, photo or image. We first start with images, NFT’s, photographs, etc and will expand to long-form content, video, digital assets, collectables, fashion, and many other forms of digital content. We call this “**Compute over Content**,” which allows creators to program, assign rights, royalties and any other computation element to the content. This includes content filters or gating capabilities, which can be based on the social or viewing context in which the image is presented. For example, a watermark or low-resolution filter can be applied to an image and only removed if you “follow” the creator or “like” the image. Such as Mash-ups, re-mix, and artist/fan collabs where the full chain of attribution is able to profit for each individual contribution. The result is creation of new iterative assets that have a life of their own beyond first minting and generate additional royalties for all creators **Filters for Utility (Distribution / Ownership Security and Authenticity)** The use of filters provide a new layer of protection for the content owner by adding mechanism to watermark and or change the coloring, resolution or quality of the image in order to distribute a reduced version of the original image. This will open up a whole new world for content monetization and management that is if the full control of the creator and truly integrates user and fans into the content and community in new and profound ways where they can participate as owners in the content and upside.
