# Game Theory **Published by:** [BraveLED](https://paragraph.com/@braveled/) **Published on:** 2023-09-17 **URL:** https://paragraph.com/@braveled/game-theory ## Content In human society, most relationships between individuals can be viewed through the lens of game theory. People interact strategically, making moves and countermoves to maximize their own interests. Yet we are also interdependent, needing cooperation to achieve good outcomes. Thus human relations have an intricate balance of competition and coordination. In workplaces, employees compete for promotions and bonuses, but must collaborate to complete projects. In politics, parties attack opponents yet compromise to pass legislation. In dating, people market themselves to attract mates while trying to ascertain the sincerity of others. In friendships, we bond by sharing vulnerabilities but jockey subtly for status and favors. Game theory applies not just to direct interactions but also to how we present ourselves. We craft our image - online profiles, social media posts, conversations at parties - to appeal to others and gain influence. We act generous, witty, successful, attempting to improve our position in an implicit social game. At its extremes, reducing human relations to a game can become cynical manipulation. But rationally examining incentives and strategy can help us understand behavior and make better choices. When we appreciate the game-like nature of society, we can temper competitive instincts with empathy and principle - cooperating when we must, competing when we should. ## Publication Information - [BraveLED](https://paragraph.com/@braveled/): Publication homepage - [All Posts](https://paragraph.com/@braveled/): More posts from this publication - [RSS Feed](https://api.paragraph.com/blogs/rss/@braveled): Subscribe to updates
