# Settlers of Identity Retrospective By [Canto Identity Protocol](https://paragraph.com/@canto-identity-protocol) · 2023-06-21 --- Thank you to those who tried Canto Identity Protocol (CIP) on testnet during the [Settlers of Identity event](https://settlers.cantoidentity.build/). This article recaps some of the highlights from the event, including participation, learnings, and improvements made to CIP. Event Overview -------------- The Settlers of Identity testnet event introduced the Canto community to CIP, a permissionless protocol empowering individuals to self-custody their on-chain self-expression.  By utilizing CIP’s Open Aggregating Registration System (OARS), an innovative primitive for aggregating protocols, participants could explore three identity subprotocols: Namespace, PFP, and Bio. To become a Settler of Identity, users had to create and add these subprotocols to their Canto Identity (CID) NFT and provide feedback on their experience. Key Learnings ------------- ![Settlers of Identity Event](https://storage.googleapis.com/papyrus_images/db25a638858a688c263fa6ba85f7817ccbc1c9a2ebe6beb4ce0f86ddaa7bd49b.png) Settlers of Identity Event Participation in the Settlers of Identity event allowed for testing of how the CIP registration system and interface would work seamlessly together to create a CID, a new form of on-chain identity. Overall the event saw strong participation, with 7,252 unique settlers minting a CID during the 24-hour event.  Settlers who created a CID described the experience as fast and smooth. Users appreciated the straightforward UX and UI, making creating and customizing a CID easy to do and understand. What stood out to one user was “the experience of creating a whole profile, not just a name like ENS.” Some users could not mint a Bio NFT during the Settlers event. The cause of the error was a bug in the interface. The smart contract was hard-coded to a 200-character limit, while the front end stated the limit was 500 characters. Users who exceeded the 200-character smart contract limit were unable to mint a Bio NFT. The team updated the interface to reflect the correct character limit and resolved the issue. Settlers gave additional feedback, including: * Minted Bio, Name, and PFP traits not rendering in the preview * Modal pop-up buttons working incorrectly * Unresponsive front-end after completing a transaction Fixes to these issues were pushed during the Settlers event, improving the experience for users. ### Additional Settlers of Identity Feedback Users who did not previously have a testnet Canto Name NFT were required to mint one on Canto Namespace Protocol. During the Identity event, when users minted new tile trays to create a Canto Name, they could not see the tile traits to create a name successfully. The team identified the error causing the tile trays not to appear and deployed the testnet solution.
