Ordered by the Senate of the Town of Setúbal in 1697, probably according to the design of the architect Francisco da Silva Tinoco, with the aim of integrating the plan to supply the town with water.

It was moved in 1937 from the former Praça do Sapal (now Praça de Bocage) to Praça Teófilo Braga.

The Sapal fountain – built in white and pink marble – currently comprises three main bodies: the tank, in five juxtaposed semicircles, into which the water falls, through the mouths of five carved masks, in low relief. In the plane above these compositions, on a segmented triangular base, three armillary spheres are arranged, supported by as many balusters. The spheres surround a kind of closed templete, with a prismatic section, flanked by two volutes. The aforementioned temple is finished off by the crowned Portuguese coat of arms.

They support the shield, on the left and on the right, two putti.

In its current orientation, on the south side of the temple, the following inscription can be read: “Reigning El-rei D. Pedro II”. The opposite face reads: “The Senate of the Chamber of this remarkable and ever loyal town of Setúbal had this work done in the era of 1697”.

On this same side, two reliefs are carved, depicting ships of the time.

While located in Praça de Bocage, on this side there was, attached to the fountain, a drinking fountain for animals.
