The pillory of Setúbal is made up of a Corinthian column of white marble with dark veins, from excavations carried out in Troia.

The plinth is classically shaped, with a Corinthian capital, topped by a quadrangular pyramid.

It features an iron spike to the bottom of which metal pieces resembling impacted spheres are attached.

Inscriptions on each of the four faces of the pedestal tell the story of the construction of this symbol, completed in 1774.

It replaced the primitive Pelourinho da Vila, which stood in the old Largo da Ribeira Velha and which had meanwhile been demolished.

It is further read that the commissioner was the Marquês de Pombal, and the expense was borne by the Town Council of the then village of Setúbal.
