According to Cointelegraph, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) issued a paper titled "Cryptocurrency Wash Trading" which pointed out that after studying 29 centralized cryptocurrency exchanges, it was found that an average of more than 70% of the trading volume on the platform was wash trading. Among them, the wash trading of 12 "Tier-2 exchanges" even reached 80% of the total trading volume.
Wash trading has short-term motivations and often affects the ranking of trading platforms on data and statistics sites such as CoinMarketCap and the short-term price of cryptocurrencies, the researchers said.
The exchanges studied in this paper include: Bitstamp, Coinbase, Gemini, Binance, Bittrex, Bitfinex, HitBTC, Huobi, KuCoin, Liquid, Okex, Poloniex and Zb, etc.
