Shall I regurgitatethose tired old tropes?Barbary apes, Rule BritanniaMottled Utrechtian paperWith the keen eye of a British expatriateFor the bleeding obviousYet, when I see Gibraltar my heart swellsNot just withTales of past victories, sieges endured,Ramparts withstanding, bastions defendedOr something half rememberedOf Lord Nelson, John LennonNot only with Joyce’s beautiful song:“O and the sea, the sea crimson sometimes like fire,and the glorious sunsets and the figtrees in the Alameda gardens;”Or the Moorish castleNeanderthal caves and Sandy Bay… I think of seagulls circling under the sunTo a bird, experts on their prehistoric treatyProudly warninghuoh-huoh-huohingWith every strut and squawk declaringThis is mine, my homeYou will not make me leaveDaring dogfightersof rapacious raptorsThe squalling squadronsTake flight to fightAnd yet again gainWinged victoryOf course I think of the apes, our historyThis extraordinary communityBut more often than not I think ofseagulls and the sea…The little spaceYou made on the RockFor migratory birdsLike my family; me.The Seagulls and the Sea, AI-art
