What is folk art?
-----------------

Let’s consider [some ideas about what folk art is](https://www.internationalfolkart.org/exhibitions/online-exhibitions/). This list is by no means exhaustive and we’d love for readers to add their elaborations in the comments below. But, to get the conversation started, here are some characteristics of folk art.

*   May be decorative or utilitarian
    
*   Is handmade; it may include handmade elements, as well as new, synthetic, or recycled components.
    
*   May be made for use within a community of practice or it may be produced for sale as a form of income and empowerment.
    
*   May be learned formally or informally; folk art may also be self-taught.
    
*   May include intangible forms of expressive culture like dance, song, poetry, writing, music.
    
*   Is traditional; it reflects shared cultural aesthetics and social issues. It is recognized that, as traditions are dynamic, traditional folk art may change over time and may include innovations in tradition.
    
*   Is of, by, and for the people; all people, inclusive of class, status, culture, community, ethnicity, gender, and religion

Spring equinox 2023
-------------------

Our premiere issue will lift on spring equinox, 2023 full of articles relevant to the current moment, accompanying NFT illustrations, some blockchain humor, news, reviews, and how-to’s. The issue will be available for sale as an NFT on a blockchain yet to be determined. All the illustrations in issue 001 will be on sale as well with proceeds going to the artists themselves.
