# What is Bitcoin? #BTC

Have you heard of [#Bitcoin](https://twitter.com/hashtag/Bitcoin?src=hashtag_click)? It's a digital currency that was created in 2009 by an anonymous person or group of people using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.

Unlike traditional currencies, Bitcoin is decentralized, which means it's not controlled by any government or financial institution. Instead, it's powered by a network of computers around the world.

One of the key features of Bitcoin is its security. Transactions are recorded on a public ledger called the [#blockchain](https://twitter.com/hashtag/blockchain?src=hashtag_click), which makes it difficult for anyone to cheat the system. Plus, Bitcoin can't be counterfeited like paper money.

Another cool thing about Bitcoin is that it's finite. There will only ever be 21 million Bitcoins in existence, which gives it value like gold or other precious metals. And you can buy and sell Bitcoin on various exchanges.
