# The First Mistakes I Made in Web3 — and What I’d Do Differently > Real lessons from my early days navigating Web3 as a non-tech beginner. **Published by:** [Cryptojotters](https://paragraph.com/@cryptojotters/) **Published on:** 2025-08-01 **Categories:** web3, lessons, web3journey, cryptomistakes **URL:** https://paragraph.com/@cryptojotters/web3-first-mistakes ## Content When I first stepped into Web3, I thought I had to learn everything — fast. DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, blockchains, wallets, gas fees... all of it. It was like drinking from a firehose. Looking back, I didn’t need to know everything. But I did need to avoid a few common traps. Here are the biggest mistakes I made — and what I’d do differently today. 1⃣ Chasing Hype Over Value I jumped on trends because they were “hot” — meme tokens, flashy airdrops, hype DAOs. Most of them faded. Some were straight-up scams. ✅ What I’d do now: Focus on projects that solve real problems or have clear, active communities. Hype fades. Value sticks. 2⃣ Trying to Do Everything at Once I tried learning DeFi, NFTs, trading, and community building all at once. It burned me out. I became a generalist with no direction. ✅ What I’d do now: Pick one path. For me, it was content creation and communication. For you, it could be writing, support, design, or education. Master one lane, then branch out. 3⃣ Ignoring Community I was lurking, not connecting. Just following influencers, watching from the sidelines. ✅ What I’d do now: Join small, focused communities. Ask questions. Share thoughts. Give value. Web3 is built on trust — and trust comes from showing up. 4⃣ No Portfolio, No Proof I had no public work. Just skills in my head. Nobody could vouch for me because I wasn’t showing my work. ✅ What I’d do now: Start publishing early. Threads, posts, articles — even small wins. Don’t wait till you’re “ready.” Web3 rewards action. 5⃣ Not Asking for Help I was afraid to look “dumb.” So I stayed stuck. ✅ What I’d do now: Ask anyway. DM people respectfully. Join forums. Jump into Telegrams. The right people will respond. Final Thoughts Web3 is overwhelming at first. That’s okay. Mistakes are part of the process — just don’t let them keep you stuck. If you’re new, start small. Be useful. Show your work. And give yourself time to grow. 👉 Drop a comment: What’s one mistake you’ve made (or fear making) in Web3?
