# Stop and Listen to that inner chatter

Stop whatever you are doing at the moment and listen to that inner chatter you are having in your mind at this very moment or even few moments earlier. What were your last thoughts before drifting to sleep last night? Was it positive or a negative talk? Were you talking to someone in your head. Were you having those conversations you always wanted to had with the person who is no longer in your life. Were you replaying an old fight with someone and you were thinking what you should have said instead. Or were you self imposing judgmental views of other people to yourself which have never seen the day of life.

These thoughts are often unintentional. Our mind picks up a thought and we go on feeding it, building it. We add scenarios, conversations which we are familiar with and we keep adding next chapter to that story. The story which is ended, the ship which has sailed. Sometimes these are repetitive thoughts just like a song playing in our head. We keep going back to it again and again and again.

> _Most of the time it is a useless, constant, involuntary analysis of what life could have been._

Mindfulness is one thing which can help. Being mindful is about to be in the present moment. It means to tame your mind to fully involve itself in the task at the hand and not to let it wander. Even if it does, bring it back to the thing you are doing, to the conversations you are actually having with someone sitting next to you. It is like soft pat on the back and to ask it — Come back here.

> _We cannot stop our mind from thinking. It is its natural task. We should only ask it, to think better, to do its job better._

We can always try to pay attention to what we are thinking at the moment. We should gently divert those thoughts to more positive, fruitful chatters. Whenever we find ourselves having conversations, dialogues with people who are no longer part of our lives, we can ask our mind to let them go. Like really let them go. Some people have the tendency to stay in our heads long after they are gone from our lives. We need to push ourselves to move on, moment by moment, thought by thought. We need to free up this space and to have thoughts about the better and optimistic future.

All said, it is so easy to write about it compared to actually doing it. I have been paying attention to my thoughts recently and sometimes I wonder how easily my mind can create scenarios, situations, conversations which are never going to happen and how easily I get lost in them and waste precious minutes, sometimes hours of my life.

If you are able to tame your mind even a little bit. Please do share your opinion and help people like me to lead more mindful lives.
