DR. MALCOLM: If there’s one thing the history of evolution has taught us it’s that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, it expands to new territories, it crashes through barriers painfully, maybe even dangerously. PARK SCIENTIST: Are you implying that a population made entirely of female animals will breed? DR. MALCOLM: No. I’m simply saying that life finds a way. In the words of Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park: “Nature finds a way.” We’ve all marveled at the twists and turns that nature takes, but sometimes, it leaves us truly amazed.Crows are really, really smart birds that can learn and pass on knowledge to their young.Ever heard of crows and magpies repurposing anti-bird spikes to build their nests? Oh, the irony! What was supposed to deter birds ended up as materials for the bird’s nest! Imagine those long metal spikes that are put up on buildings to shoo birds away. Well, turns out, these birds decided to give them a twist. Nests found in Rotterdam and Antwerp were crafted almost entirely from these very spikes meant to deter them. The nests were built from metal spikes designed specifically to scare away birds! And guess what? The birds loved them. It’s like they’re saying, “Thanks for the construction material, humans!” It’s a clear example of how nature is ever-evolving, always learning, and adapting regardless of the circumstances. This “metallic” evolution in bird architecture teaches us a thing or two about survival and creativity. And doesn’t this bird behavior remind you of startup founders? Entrepreneurs should take a cue from these resourceful birds. They adapt to their environment, using whatever’s available to build their nests and thrive.Birds naturally collect twigs and leaves to build their nests.Similarly, startup founders should be willing to pivot, change, and keep moving forward, no matter the challenges. You will face numerous obstacles in many shapes and forms. Hiring problems, founder infighting, overbearing clients, bad reviews, lack of resources and rejections. But you learn, adapt, overcome and move forward. It’s poetic and beautiful, really. Just like the crows and magpies, entrepreneurs need to hone the power of adaptation, using the resources at hand to create something remarkable. But don’t overdo it and resort to misrepresentation or fraud.Don’t lie about your data, abuse your customers and deceive investors. Learn from nature. If birds get creative with anti-bird spikes, we too should embrace the dynamic nature of business and innovation.
