# Differentiating Allergic Cough from Asthma: Key Indicators

> Distinguishing between allergic cough and asthma can be challenging, as both conditions involve respiratory symptoms. However, there are key differences that can help in identifying the correct condition. Allergic cough is primarily triggered by exposure to allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander, and is characterized by a dry, persistent cough without significant mucus production. Other symptoms may include itchy eyes, runny nose, and sneezing.  Asthma, on the other hand, often involves wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness in addition to coughing. These symptoms are usually exacerbated by physical activity, cold air, or respiratory infections. Asthma can also cause nighttime coughing, which can disrupt sleep. To accurately diagnose the condition, a healthcare provider may perform lung function tests, such as spirometry, to assess how well the lungs are working. Allergy tests can also determine specific triggers that may be causing the symptoms.  Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. While antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids are commonly used for allergic cough, asthma may require inhalers that deliver bronchodilators and corticosteroids directly to the lungs. Understanding these differences ensures that individuals receive the appropriate treatment and management strategies for their condition.
