Here’s an overview of equivalent exams in various countries:  United States Middle School to High School Transition: Unlike China, the United States does not have a national exam for transitioning from middle school to high school. Admission to public high schools is generally based on the geographic school district. However, selective or specialized high schools, such as those in New York City (e.g., Stuyvesant High School), may require students to take entrance exams like the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). United Kingdom 11+ Exam: In some parts of the UK, students take the 11+ exam at the end of primary school (around age 11) to gain entry into grammar schools, which are selective secondary schools. Common Entrance Exam (CEE): For entry into independent secondary schools, students often take the Common Entrance Exam at ages 11 or 13. Japan High School Entrance Exam: Similar to China, Japan has rigorous entrance exams for admission to high schools. These exams are highly competitive and play a crucial role in determining the academic trajectory of students. South Korea Middle School to High School Exam: South Korea also has an entrance exam system for high school admission, with students taking exams to qualify for specialized or more prestigious high schools. Germany Transition to Secondary Education: German students are assessed throughout their primary education, and based on their academic performance and teacher recommendations, they are directed into different types of secondary schools (e.g., Gymnasium, Realschule, Hauptschule) without a single standardized national exam. France Brevet des Collèges: At the end of middle school (collège), French students take the Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB), which assesses their knowledge and skills. While the Brevet is important, it does not determine high school placement, which is generally based on continuous assessment and teacher recommendations. Summary While many countries do not have a direct equivalent to the Chinese Zhongkao, several have their own forms of assessments or entrance exams that play a significant role in the transition from primary or middle school to secondary education. These exams and assessments vary in structure, significance, and the age at which they are taken, reflecting different educational systems and cultural priorities.
