Farcaster is a fascinating corner of the internet to be a part of. I have only been using the platform for a couple of months and it feels like I have only turned the first few pages in a much longer book.

This whole journey started for me last year. I am a 21-year-old entrepreneurship student attending Florida Gulf Coast University. I had a desire to get into crypto mainly because of a friend of mine who had been into it. I messed around with some meme coins on Ethereum and got burned, so I stepped away from it for a bit. I took a break from crypto as a whole, but the desire to learn more about it, and to be a part of it stayed with me. A few months went by and it was time for me to choose my classes for the next semester with my guidance counselor. I was browsing courses to take and one caught my eye, Blockchain Applications. “I can learn how to apply stuff having to do with that crypto thing I was interested in,” I thought, “How cool is it that they offer this here”. I jumped on the opportunity right then, and before I knew it I was in class with @nounishprof.

I don’t think I have ever been as excited to take a class as I was with this one, I looked forward to going every week and was extremely engaged in what we were learning. Taking this class felt like I was in the 90’s taking a class on how to apply the internet before it was widely adopted. Decentralization is fascinating to me, and how we can apply it was extremely exciting to learn about. This class opened me up to Web3 in ways I am very thankful for. I spark inside of me was born, determining me to build something in this space.

I remember @nounishprof mentioning this decentralized social networking platform that she and a lot of her friends were a part of around the time that the Degen chain came out. The next week she came into class and showed us the chart and I was flabbergasted. It was so cool to me that I got to learn about crypto straight from somebody who was directly involved in what was happening in the space. The sense of community she talked about and the protocol itself got me extremely interested in Farcaster as a whole. Taking this class eventually led to me landing an internship role with @nounishprof’s media company, GM Farcaster. She told me that she would be shifting her focus towards building this company centered around Farcaster, and I was overwhelmingly excited to have the opportunity to be a part of what she is building.

Getting used to using Farcaster has been quite the experience. This has been the most community-centered social network I have used. Channels help form these groups but with Farcaster, it goes deeper than that. It seems like everyone is unified around a common goal. They see the potential in a platform like this and put energy into it because they believe in it. It feels as if I am actively participating in a broader community instead of just using an app. If web2 is the interstate, this is a quaint neighborhood road. People are letting you merge, flashing their lights as a thank you. Everybody is unified to get from point A to point B. We all want this thing to work and will put in the energy to make it happen. Web2 can often feel like the Wild West, it is everyone for themself. Farcaster has been the exact opposite of that. How the founders work directly with the community to build something great is cool to see. It has been beautiful taking part in something like this and I am beyond excited to see where it goes.
