Creating a brand new, familiar and delightful calling experience
----------------------------------------------------------------

Qtalk is a smart dialer app that uses PSTN+ technology that establishes a P2P connection while connecting with the person overcall. Using this we were able to improve the calling experience by letting users play games, browse internet together & know the intent before answering the calls.

In late 2019, we at Qtalk started seeing a cohort of users using our platform for normal calling apart from the fun experiences we offered. We saw this as an opportunity that can help with user acquisition. Our current was designed only towards data calls which we had on our platform. We discovered while researching that users find our experience different than other calling platforms which was promoting drop-offs.

The new experience was brand new, familiar and delightful catering to both the cohorts using it for function and fun.

### Process

In 2 months, with constant learnings and feedback from users, the engineering team & regular testing, we designed the mobile user experience. We also built features like call intents & caller Id for making our platform equally usable for generic calling.

### Call Intents

We decided to build this feature as an MVP to understand whether users prefer sharing an intent before calling. Using this, a Quser can specify the intent of the call and the other Quser can see the intent while on the ringing screen. It was a quick and scrappy implementation since we thought of adding at the end.

### Urgent Calling

For some crucial moments when answering a call seems necessary, we shipped this feature which overrides the native vibration setting & the phone start ringing.

### Brand new calling experience

Calling experience to help with the functional and fun needs of our users. From our research, we discovered that there was a significant drop-off as the layout seemed complex & not intuitive. So, we designed a new calling experience that uses similar patterns as of other diallers while highlighting the unique experiences we offered.

The incoming call screen was updated with delightful animations that looked beautiful and fresh. We also added Caller Id so that our users need not depend on other platforms for learning about unknown callers.

**Making activities discovery and experience frictionless**

From research and understanding our current offering, we leant that users didn’t discover our offerings from the calling screen. So, we redesigned and placed highlighted the activities on the call screen for quick and easy discovery.

We gave access to necessary actions on the active activity space so that users can continue enjoying without any interruption.
