# ETHChicago Monthly - June 2024 *The best of web3 news and events in the Midwest* By [ETHChicago](https://paragraph.com/@ethchicago) · 2024-06-13 community, news, events, partnerships --- ETHChicagoans, The past month has brought about a series of unexpected surprises, including [last minute ETH ETF approvals by the SEC](https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/01/major-cryptocurrency-shift-due-to-sec-ethereum-etf-ruling-vaneck-ceo.html) and crypto suddenly becoming [a hot button issue on the campaign trail](https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/10/trump-crypto-biden-00157051). The mainstreaming of BTC and ETH via ETFs is a significant development for the asset class, as we now have alignment between regulators regarding the commodity status of the biggest two crypto assets. In the Ethereum community, [thought leaders are now scrambling to describe ETH](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2024-05-28/framework-ventures-co-founder-bitcoin-is-digital-gold-video) in a way that is palatable to Wall Street asset managers. This is a narrative game that is likely to continue evolving as public understanding of what these assets and their underlying networks enable matures. [Introduced by Ethereum Foundation Researcher Justin Drake](https://ethresear.ch/t/based-rollups-superpowers-from-l1-sequencing/15016), based rollups allow ETH mainnet block builders and proposers to sequence layer-2 transactions, thereby inheriting the liveness and decentralization of the Ethereum layer-1. Projects such as [Taiko](https://taiko.xyz/ecosystem) have recently launched, providing based rollup solutions to developers. We will be exploring this subject more in-depth soon.
