This has been my main preoccupation thematically these past three years. The Spectacle! Iconophilia! Idolatry! All that. And of course the memes. Now these vids I'm doing remixing ephemera. Splicing and overlays and mashing of references. Gesture. Phone videos recording my laptop streaming live video, or the TV broadcast, overlay the cutout of me speaking to the camera. Emojis. Pop music. There's irony, sarcasm, parody, critique. Many layers on which the totality is speaking. They have tended to be very satisfying. When no words will do. No photo, no video. There is no narrative vocabulary that helps. But a "work" that draws from my daily routine then relies on pure process of manipulated media in an app as the first cut of the knife against raw clay. Like, I'll add in all the clips and speed them up 3x just as a starting point. There's a unique significance to the fact of doing it, what I choose to capture and include and why. What things I remix in, the interplay of music with subject and then always something absurd, irreverent, intentionally ambiguous and downright contradictory. Delighting even more in the tension that my own "identity" and externally defined categorization - PLACE & PROJECTION - holds me at odds with what I am able to assert. My own literacy cross-culturally making an overall impression that is confusing and totally illegible to most observers. Have I found a kind of "work" that combines sufficient numbers and kinds of languages to where now I think I've stared to be able to _SAY_ something at the frequency of the thing I'm trying to talk about?
