The idea for the Core Devices came to me during several psychedelic experiences, meditation and stream of consciousness creation in 3D modelling software Blender, as an attempt to pull out the visuals from these experiences alongside the narrative and lessons that I perceived from them. A narrative that was fed into by the topics mentioned in the subtitle of this article.

I wanted to write this article because this is an area I am deeply passionate about, the unification of typically disparate subjects as a means to promote an understanding of our minds, our emotions, and attempt to bridge the divide we see in the world today. I see that at our core, the way we feel is universal, how the xenophobe fears the destruction of his country so does the refugee, one is perceived destruction, the other is a reality of destruction. I use these as an example of one of the greatest divisions we see in the world. If by some miracle I can use my art to bring the idea of balance, of the development of our psyche together, then I will push in the direction of that outcome.

**On to the Core Devices themselves...**

These core devices tell a story in the creation of the mind through the form of abstract geometric objects. As though neurologically developing on a purely mathematical basis, maths and physics being how sciences observe the world at large. Each moment in the creation of the mind adding to the previous in its depth, thus the use of the Fibonacci sequence, the golden rule to determine the size of each sphere as it moves from the single point of origin. Naturally the forms begin to become complex and vastly different from the original form that to look at from the outside the core is barely visible.

The inspiration behind the aesthetic of the Core Device series stems from man-made architecture, like brutalism (which is high function) and baroque (which is maximalist pure decoration), and spiritual practices borrowed from different belief systems the world over; sacred geometry plays a large role in the layout of the work, particularly the eastern tradition of the mandala, although this can also be observed throughout other cultures as well. By combining elements of historical and contemporary architecture, psychological/psychoanalytical theory, spiritual ideology and philosophical ideas I found a balance between these disparate subjects and brought the Core Device series to life.

The Fibonacci Sequence in scaling action

Choosing to see people as their core self, the purest form of who they are requires moving with care through the layers they have built up around themselves to see them as they truly are, human, and conscious, loving and afraid.

The iterations for the current consciousness design starts out with a single point light.

The point of consciousness spoken of in many of the worlds belief systems, namely sacred geometry teachings. It is from this point that all other thought processes exist. Around this point is the next circle or sphere, made of a crystal that protects the core itself, this is the basis of human survival, between love and fear, danger and safety. This is akin to instinct.

A transparent shield around the point of light

As we move out further from the root and its shield we begin to “build” our reality, in some places it is complete thanks to genetic coding, but other areas are left blank or broken by our surroundings, by trauma and affirmation.

The build modifier

The build modifier in action

As we move out the layers begin to build even more, but there are inevitably flaws and holes in who we are based on the previous sentiment, however, they begin to become more “solid” and ingrained in our minds.

Solidify adding a depth to the otherwise flat faces

We also “mirror” the behaviours of those around us such as parents, teachers, siblings and our peers. This is to train us how to behave in the society, tribe or culture we were born into.

This further solidifies the externalised nature of consciousness.

Further complexities through solidification

With each layer of the mind we get further away from the light that we originated as, a pure form uncorrupted or influenced by the world around us. Things become darker the further from origin we become.

Layers becoming darker as they move from the core

Each one of these layers becomes more fragmented and decimated as the person grows into a young adult.

Multiple layers of modifiers

It is only once we have developed enough that we become conscious of the watchful eye of others, seeing whether we are behaving correctly for the tribal ideology, regardless of whether it is healthy or not, this is objectively true for all humans.

Applying the mods so they can’t be changed easily

By this point any and all corruptions or confirmations of the mind are fairly applied, the individual thinks this is now the basis of their identity. It is this clinging to identity that permeates the development of the child into a young adult and as such they begin to challenge and resist that which came before.

Testing the waters as a teenager

This rebellion doesn’t necessarily take any particular form, or pattern, but is necessary to test the boundaries of the world that came before. Which can be enlightening for many as they see the issues within society or within themselves that they can then identify with their immediate peers a lot more, rather than the traditions of those that came before.

Screenshot of the current Core Device

With this particular individual something happens to them, they question the nature of their surroundings in depth and find the reality they were told exists was just one persons perception. Thus shattering their sense of identity, they “collapse” beneath the weight of their “decimation” and are in pieces.

Decimate modifier

and the prying eyes of those around them reflect back to them, as though people can’t see their broken form, always looking at the imperfect version of themselves they have become. This seeing through and ignorance of the new layers, the new person, leaves them to pick up the pieces for themselves.
