# Did Apple save Meta? **Published by:** [furola](https://paragraph.com/@furola/) **Published on:** 2023-06-08 **URL:** https://paragraph.com/@furola/did-apple-save-meta ## Content Twenty years ago, Apple's iPhone started the smartphone revolution and saved countless companies. Now, Apple MR is coming out for the thousandth time, can it be the savior for Meta's? Yes, the meta-universe is a dying breed in the tech world, but Meta hasn't given up on its beloved project. Just yesterday, the tech giant unveiled its latest VR headset, Meta Quest 3. While Meta has invested billions of dollars in its Reality Labs division and will continue to launch new products for the foreseeable future, the timing of Meta Quest 3's release is still very surprising. Meta announced the headset just three days before Apple's WWDC, which may reflect the company's lack of confidence in maintaining its leadership position. The timing will also allow them to capitalize on the new wave of meta-universe buzz generated by Apple's headset. However, will the Apple hype alone be enough to keep Zucker's metaverse dream alive? The real-life "Titanic" battle Oculus, the pioneer of modern VR headsets, has been the pioneer of the Meta metaverse platform. However, Apple is trying to bring the "magic" to the market with its new product. The leaked information about the headset, called Reality Pro, has attracted worldwide attention before its release. Before introducing Apple's product, it's worth mentioning Meta's competitor, the Quest 3, at $499, is twice as powerful as its predecessor, the Quest 2, and 40% less thick thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chip. In addition to these processing performance improvements, Meta also improves the headset's augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) capabilities. The Quest 3 boasts a full-color video see-through mode, which allows users to see the outside world through the camera in front of the device. The pill-shaped part in the middle of the device is a depth sensor that further improves the accuracy of object tracking. The Quest 3 reportedly has a slightly higher display resolution than the Quest 2, which has a resolution of about 1920 pixels for a single eye. However, that's where the improvements stop. meta said it will announce more features for the headset before release. quest 3 still doesn't have modern augmented reality features such as face and eye tracking. In addition, the single depth sensor looks somewhat inferior compared to what Apple is developing. Rumored Apple MR features include augmented reality capabilities, a 4K (2160p) micro-OLED display, eye and gesture tracking, an external battery pack to reduce size, and even support for prescription lenses. The device will be powered by Apple's iconic M-series chips for arithmetic power, and Apple is even expected to release a new operating system called xrOS. xrOS is described as a 3D version of the iPhone operating system, and Apple has assembled a "secret team of hundreds of employees" to work on the related XR ecosystem. "Each headset will have two chips inside. However, this dreamlike product has one major drawback - the Apple tax. The headset will reportedly be priced at $2,999, which is considered "too expensive for most consumers. The headset also does not have a "killer app", which experts believe will prevent most users from blindly buying the headset. However, the headset is aimed primarily at the consumer market, and many predict it will bring the "Apple effect" to the metaverse. The news comes at a time when the average consumer seems to have forgotten about VR headsets. According to people familiar with the matter, more than half of Quest headsets have been discontinued after just six months of purchase. However, even as the consumer XR market is slowly cooling, the enterprise XR market is secretly booming.Going astray Meta's meta-universe was a colossal failure that accomplished nothing other than losing $36 billion and hundreds of thousands of unused VR headsets. However, this is not the case for rival metaverse products or rival VR headsets. Until Oculus came along, Magic Leap was the name to be associated with VR headsets because it was one of the main companies driving VR innovation. the Magic Leap 2 headset will enter the market later this year, but crucially it is not aimed at consumer use, but at the enterprise market. Lenovo, a major player in the enterprise hardware space, has also entered the space with the launch of its ThinkReality VRX headset. While the headset costs about $1,299, it has already started shipping, outpacing both Apple and Meta. Meta has suffered before, realizing that users won't use the headset without specific scenarios, such as no killer apps. But the enterprise sector has found a solution. vr has a wide range of applications in the enterprise, including employee safety training for emergency procedures, sales and marketing presentations in which customers can explore products in 3d. However, one of the most important directions is the use of VR in industrial design, where engineers can interact with virtual environments to simulate product designs. ". While the consumer meta-universe may have died out, the enterprise meta-universe is just beginning to rise. While Apple may be pushing Reality Pro XR into the knowledge worker and creative space, it's clear that Meta hasn't done so yet. The company has shown no interest in enterprise use cases, except for the occasional mention in virtual meetings. Instead, Zuckerberg seemed more interested in concerts in the meta-universe and users spending thousands of dollars on virtual costumes. In a way, Quest 3 is a further step in Meta's fragile meta-universe strategy. In short, the headset appears to be a sacrificial lamb whose role is to show investors that the billions of dollars invested in Reality Labs are still somewhat useful. Apple may replicate the iPhone model with the Pro Reality XDR, transforming a dying market into a mainstream one. However, just as the iPhone dominates and dominates the high-end phone market but leaves room for cheaper products, the Pro Reality headset could become the best high-end headset at over $2,000, leaving Meta to pick up the scraps that will hopefully save its VR dreams. ## Publication Information - [furola](https://paragraph.com/@furola/): Publication homepage - [All Posts](https://paragraph.com/@furola/): More posts from this publication - [RSS Feed](https://api.paragraph.com/blogs/rss/@furola): Subscribe to updates
