_This article is about the Roman goddess. For other uses, see_ [_Libertas (disambiguation)_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertas_\(disambiguation\))_._

**Libertas**

Goddess of liberty

Symbol[Pileus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pileus_\(hat\)), rod (_vindicta_ or _festuca_)EquivalentsGreek equivalent[Eleutheria](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleutheria)

[Denarius](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denarius) (42 BC) issued by [Cassius Longinus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaius_Cassius_Longinus) and [Lentulus Spinther](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lentulus_Spinther), depicting the crowned head of Libertas, with a sacrificial jug and [_lituus_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lituus) on the reverse

**Libertas** ([Latin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_language) for 'liberty' or 'freedom', pronounced [\[liːˈbɛrt̪aːs̠\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Latin)) is the [Roman goddess](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_mythology) and [personification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personification) of [liberty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty). She became a politicised figure in the Late Republic, featured on coins supporting the [populares](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populares) faction, and later those of the assassins of [Julius Caesar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Caesar). Nonetheless, she sometimes appears on coins from the imperial period, such as [Galba](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galba)'s "Freedom of the People" coins during his short reign after the death of [Nero](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero).[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertas#cite_note-1) She is usually portrayed with two accoutrements: the spear and a [phrygian cap](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phrygian_cap), which she holds out on the spear, rather than wears on her head.

The Greek equivalent of the goddess Libertas is [Eleutheria](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleutheria), the personification of liberty. There are many [post-classical depictions of liberty as a person](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_\(personification\)) which often retain some of the [iconography](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iconography) of the Roman goddess.
