The history of the Nike brand begins with the founding of Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964 by Bill Bauerman and Phil Knight in Oregon, USA. The company sold Japanese Onitsuka Tiger sports shoes, but in 1971 the company ended its contract with Blue Ribbon Sports. Bill Bauerman and Phil Knight decided to create their own brand, called Nike. The name of the brand was inspired by the Greek goddess of victory, Nike. She symbolises victory and strength, which fits perfectly with the spirit of sport. The first Nike logo was created by Carolyn Davidson, a student at the University of Portland, and was based on the divine, winged Greek goddess Nike. With the first Nike footwear models, such as the Nike Cortez, Nike Waffle Trainer and Nike Tailwind, the company quickly caught the attention of sports fans around the world. But the real breakthrough came in 1984 when Nike signed basketball player Michael Jordan. The Air Jordan trainers were created especially for Michael Jordan and became a hit with basketball players and fans. At the time, the Nike brand became a global icon in culture and sport.
