zkSync is a Layer 2 scaling solution for Ethereum that aims to significantly increase the transaction throughput of the network while maintaining the same level of security as the Ethereum main chain. zkSync is based on zero-knowledge rollups, a technology that allows for cryptographic verification of bundled transactions off-chain, greatly reducing bandwidth and gas costs.

With zkSync, users can transfer Ether and ERC-20 tokens quickly and cheaply, with reduced fees and wait times compared to the main chain. The Layer 2 solution also supports smart contract functionality, enabling developers to build more complex applications with the same security guarantees as the main chain.

One of the benefits of using zkSync is that it does not require any changes to the Ethereum protocol or existing dApps, making it easy to integrate with existing infrastructure. Moreover, the rollout of zkSync has been gradual, starting with zkSync 1.0 and gradually adding more features such as support for complex smart contracts in zkSync 2.0.
