863 – The Byzantine Empire defeated the Emirate of Melitene at the Battle of Lalakaon, ushering in a new era of power. 1651 – Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarian army won the Battle of Worcester, the final clash of the English Civil War. 1777 – British and Hessian troops overcame American militia at the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge. 1936 – The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America was founded in Ottawa, Canada. 2001 – In Belfast, loyalists renewed a protest outside a Catholic girls’ school during the Troubles.
