# Grass touching for beginners

Given the recent happenings within the crypto and NFT markets, one piece of advice that keeps popping up is to “touch grass”. I’ve seen it multiple times before, but I never fully understood what it meant and never bothered to look it up until a few days ago.

> Touch grass

According to many [entries in Urban Dictionary](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=touch%20grass), it means to go outside. A couple of entries take it one step further and define it as getting in touch with the real world. From my understanding, I believe the core idea behind this phrase is a call to get grounded - to reconnect with the realities of who you are and your relationship with your environment and the situations around you.

If I were asked to describe who this essay is for when I began writing it, I’d most likely have said it’s for those the current market conditions have battered. Upon further thought, though, I think it’s for all of us. Getting in touch with reality is essential not only when your bags are dumping and you’re in the mental trenches; It is equally as important (if not more) when the euphoria from a big win (shorting luna, perhaps) is setting in.

Whether you’re up 1000%, have lost 99% of your net worth, or just heard about web3.0 two days ago, I think we can all agree that now would be a great time to step away from the chaos of the markets and touch some grass.

Reconnect with reality outside crypto and NFTs. Connect with your loved ones, dust off your old hobbies, take care of your mental health and reflect.

When I say reflect, I have three things in mind with regard to this market cycle:

* Reminisce. Go over your journey so far. Take responsibility for your choices. Identify your failings as well as triumphs. What could you have done differently? What worked and what didn’t? What do you think you need to continue doing? Have you made progress relative to your goals?

* Reconnect with your “why”. Examine your core beliefs. Why are you involved in the web3.0 ecosystem? What were your goals when you started out? Does your experience in web3.0 align with your values? Is the potential upside worth the hits to your mental health? Do you feel fulfilled when engaging within the ecosystem?

* Strategise. Now that you have identified how web3.0 fits into your life, it is crucial to update your plans and systems. For some, this might be to cut losses and move on with life outside web3.0. However, for those who choose to persist in web3.0, this might involve adjusting the rules by which they build their portfolio, cutting down their risk appetite, doubling down on building, or some combination of these.

When done properly, reflection leaves one with clarity of purpose, grounded and better able to weather adverse conditions.

Never forget that no matter how bad it gets, things can change for the better. Sure, this advice has some survivorship bias + hopium + cope mixed in, but I think it’s a better outlook than despair and pessimism when it’s grounded in reality.

Don’t forget to touch grass.
