What is Web 3.0?
----------------

Before talking about Web 3.0, what we should know is the mainstream definition of Web1 & Web2.

### Web 1.0: a read-only web for users

Between the 1990s and 2000s, the website pages are more in a static format. The companies or owners of the website can upload the content they created to their websites intentionally, such as the personal blog or the official website of a big company. Users could only read what have been uploaded.

### Web 2.0: read-write web for users

After 2004, the social media platform emerged. On the platform built by companies, such as Facebook, Twitter, or Medium, people not only can read the content generated by owners but also be able to be creators on the platform. They can share text, video, opinion or express their comments on others’ ideas with a simple click.

### Web 3.0: read-write-own web for users

When people see “Own”, they usually believe that they have the ownership of the created content on social media platforms. It is confusing since people can manage, edit, or delete based on their willingness. However, let’s think about this: have you ever heard or even gone through a situation where a tweet is deleted or an account is suspended permanently. Although users may appeal, it still shows the ownership does not depended on users only.

However, based on characteristics of the blockchain technology (we may discuss more in another article), the ownership confirmation would not be an issue anymore. The cryptography ensures that all properties’ ownership, whether they are cryptos or intelligence outputs in digital format, will be distributed to the guy with the corresponding key.

Why it matters?
---------------

The matters of Web 3.0 is most relevant to the technical characteristics of blockchain: immutability, security, transparency, decentralisation, etc. When people see these words, it is easy to find a result: trust. Therefore, Web 3.0 is building a trustable internet for future humanity. People may think assets, identity, payment, or any other about trust are matter, then Web 3.0 matters.

### Ownership

The previous definition has briefly discussed the solution of digital assets’ ownership in Web 3.0. Another example is the digital assets in an online game. The gamer may put a lot of effort to gain the “Frostbite”, the legend item in World of Warcraft. However, what if Blizzard would like to cease the game operation. This legend item will disappear with the game, not matter how much you have paid.

What if “Frostbite” is an NFT(non-fungible token)? In that situation, you can trade it in Opensea(NFT trading market) or let’s lay it down in your Crypto Wallet to show your grandchild. People can trust that they own digital items in the meta-world and that matters.

### Resistance

**It is censorship resistance:**

Like previous discussions, Web 2.0 cannot balance the right between users and companies. Content creators are able to do nothing if the platform decides to suspend or delete accounts of users, especially when the platform operates with an authoritarian government. However, in the decentralised form, the platform will be based on each block in the chain, which means no individual can control and manage by one centralised power whether a company or a government. All administrations should pass through the consensus of blocks, aka community.

**It is time resistance:**

Actually, this advantage is more about open source. We have faced a lot of platforms, games or services being shut-down because the companies thought the products might not be profitable. In Github, developers could fork a repository to change or maintain the project if the original one cannot satisfy the demand of users. In the blockchain world, the fork does also exist. It happens when the internal community cannot achieve a consensus. This will give communities opportunities to develop or maintain blockchains in their willingness. Users have more chance to save contents created by themselves over the time.

The matters of Web 3.0 are definitely not contained by these two only. Decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO) has been considered a new form to challenge the modern corporate system. Crypto brings a total payment infrastructure to subvert the payment system relied on traditional banks. Btw, this little article will be posted on Mirror, a Web 3.0 writing platform, as an NFT. Anyone can copy & paste it, but the record on Ethereum L2 will show everyone the copyright belongs to me, except that I send it to another address.

**How to get start?**
---------------------

* **Get a wallet**: download a wallet software to explore, such as Metamask, Brave browser.

* **Try out Dapp**: whether you want to be a creator of blogs, digital arts or you hope to build a portfolio for earning interest, the ecosystem on the blockchain can help.

* **Find a community**: simply join a community discord and read the wiki page.

* **DYOR**: the last but the most important is “Do Your Own Research”.
