Spotlighting African Builders EP11: David & Gamifying Crypto Education with Play to Learn
David’s Entry into Web3David’s introduction to the crypto space came in an unusual way, through a referral-based Ethereum scheme called “Ethereum Million Money” back in 2017. While short-lived and ultimately structured like a pyramid scheme, the experience planted a seed of curiosity. His real turning point came later, when a friend needed to receive money from abroad. Watching crypto enable a fast, fee-less transfer showed David its real-world potential and pulled him deeper into Web3.The Sp...

The Missing Link to Blockchain Adoption
The first event I attended this year was in April, a Bitget event in Abuja. It leaned more toward marketing than education, but it was still interesting to see how people responded to the buzz around crypto. A few weeks later, I joined the Avalanche Campus Tour, which had a completely different energy. This one was focused on education and onboarding, especially for newbies. The atmosphere was fresh, exciting, and relatable—you could feel the curiosity in the room as people asked questions, s...

In Episode 7 of Spotlighting African Builders, hosted by JED XO and Gneric , we sat down with Kevin Dimitra- innovator, ecosystem builder, and the visionary behind One Million Avocados. The conversation was a deep dive into the intersection of agriculture and blockchain in Africa, with Kenya at the heart of the story.
Kevin's journey into Web3 was born out of a real-world problem: the exploitation of African farmers. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he observed the glaring gap between the farm gate price of avocados in Kenya and the price they sold for globally. What started as concern quickly turned into innovation.
One Million Avocados is not just a project. It’s a movement, one that leverages blockchain to restore transparency, equity, and ownership in the agricultural value chain.
Each avocado tree is represented as a unique NFT, allowing global supporters to crowdfund the planting and maintenance of trees. At $50 per NFT, contributors help fund the farms while receiving a share of the revenue:
🧑🏾🌾 60% to farmers
🌐 20% to NFT holders
🧾 10% for operational costs
🥑 10% to the One Million Avocados project
The result? A sustainable economic model that empowers farmers and connects global supporters to the land literally.
A major factor in the project’s growth has been its partnership with Dimitra Technologies, which provides satellite monitoring, AI tools, and analytics to support the farms. This infrastructure ensures trees are healthy, production is trackable, and farmers are better equipped to make data-driven decisions.
Beyond the tech, Kevin emphasized the human layer of this initiative. Over 106 farmers have joined the program so far. Onboarding includes:
Land assessments
Training sessions
Continuous support via AI chatbots
Long-term engagement with local communities
And the interest is growing fast.
Kevin shared a heartfelt moment about his grandmother, a farmer who, like many others, faced harsh conditions and underpayment. Her story is one of the many that fuel his mission to build something better for future generations.
The project also targets young farmers, injecting fresh energy and innovation into agriculture, making it not only viable but appealing again.
One Million Avocados isn’t just about trees or tokens. It’s about reclaiming agency over African resources and creating scalable, tech-enabled solutions for age-old challenges.
Listeners were invited to support the initiative by minting NFTs not just as donors, but as co-stakeholders in a system designed for impact and equity.
This episode of Spotlighting African Builders was generously sponsored by We Them Media, a pan African collective committed to amplifying African stories, creators, and innovations both onchain and offchain. Their support continues to make these essential conversations and collaborations possible.
