# The Trilemma Table Stakes

One of the bigger challenges in crypto is the supposed [“blockchain trilemma”](https://www.ledger.com/academy/what-is-the-blockchain-trilemma) which states that like speed, price, and quality, you can have 2 out of the 3 of security, decentralization, and scalability.

Various projects take different approaches to addressing the trilemma.

Many sacrifice decentralization (at least in the short term, they claim) to focus on security and scalability with the hope that they can figure out the rest later.

Some compromise on security.

Some compromise on scalability, like Ethereum, which has sought to address this with sharding and Layer 2 solutions.

The benefits of crypto won’t happen until the trilemma is solved.

Solving the trilemma is “table stakes” for mass adoption.
