Ethereum is the name of a blockchain platform for building decentralized applications and smart contracts, and a general term for related open source software projects, which are being developed by the Ethereum Project. "Ether" is used as the currency (internal currency) necessary to use Ethereum, and is intended to be used as a utility currency. It was designed as a general-purpose computer and can run virtual machines.
