Opensea's dictatorship

Not Okay Bears, a derivative replica of the NFT project called Okay bears on Solana, migrated to the ETH ecosystem. The peak price from the opening of the listing to the final trading frenzy reached 0.33 ETH before OpenSea took the series offline after its trading volume exceeded 4K ETH, presumably due to a removal request received from the Okay Bears team. After the delisting, the floor price fell to 0.03 ETH on OpenSea's competitor LooksRare, and has now bounced back to roughly 0.24 ETH.

Here, we do not express an opinion on whether the artwork of the derivative was plagiarised, but merely take a superficial look at this type of downgrade and the far-reaching implications behind it.

It is no coincidence that Opensea's arbitrary downgrading of collections and artists has long been nothing new, raising the banner of web3 decentralisation but actually doing the work of monopolising and swaying the market, compromising with VCs and institutions but defying consensus resistance.

On 3 March 2022, the artist @ParinHeidari tweeted that she no longer had access to OpenSea's services, in addition to having her entire collection taken down from OpenSea, one of the verified series of collections with a total trade volume of 218 ETH.

The reason given by OpenSea is that Parin is an Iranian user and its terms of service explicitly prohibit the use of OpenSea's services by sanctioned users or users from sanctioned regions/countries, including Iran, North Korea, Syria and Russia, among others. Ironically, last month, Parin was named one of OpenSea's "amazing women" and is suddenly the subject of an expulsion from the platform.

Flurks by Stonetoss, a well-known American political cartoonist, was taken down because it contained political references to the US Confederate flag (patriotic ideology), the rainbow flag (gay affirmative action), the Gadsden flag (free willism) and the sickle and gavel (communism). OpenSea also took CryptoPunks V1 down due to a legal dispute with Larva Labs, as CryptoPunks V1 is strikingly similar to CryptoPunks NFT and has the same smart contract, and CryptoPunks V1 was eventually deemed a controversial project by OpenSea and taken down. Similar dictatorships happen every day: Pudgy Penguins, "flipped Azuki", CryptoMories ......

It is hard to believe that an NFT trading platform, which is based in the forest of the web3, accounts for 97% of the NFT market and has a recent valuation of $13 billion, takes from the people but turns against the interests of ordinary creators and users. While, thanks to regional proof and community power, Parin has been able to restore accounts and artworks, millions of artists and their works remain blocked from the so-called web3 and fall victim to it.

The Rise of Consensus

Fortunately, where there is oppression, there is resistance, and the discontent of the NFT community and Web3 residents with OpenSea is growing, with the slogan "The world has suffered from OpenSea for a long time" being raised. We have seen LOOKSRARE and X2Y2 continue to support the marketplace for the artwork as soon as Not Okay Bear was taken down. We are seeing a growing number of artists, led by Parin, turning their backs on Opensea in favour of a platform more in line with the blockchain and decentralised ethos due to the unfair treatment they have received.

I do not deny the greatness of Opensea's stages and believe that it will take more time to move from centralisation to decentralisation, but to completely ignore the decentralised consensus and use centralisation for evil and market manipulation under the guise of justice should be adjudicated and spurned.

The essence of value is consensus, and the justification for things to exist should not be driven by profit, but by allowing users to vote with their feet. Just as the launch of NOT OKAY BEAR was loved by the crypto market, even though it flipped other artefacts and added its own narrative, the market has his own rules and existence is justified. Decentralisation as a blockchain was originally intended to be a "rebellion" against centralism and to bring about a new world of justice, equality and freedom!

"We are taught to remember the idea, not the man, because the man may fail, he may be arrested, he may be killed, he may be forgotten, but 400 years later the idea can still change the world." -- V for Vendetta

If one day Opensea goes into decline and NOT OKAY BEAR comes back from the dead, I believe it will be the rise of consensus and free will, it will be a victory for the people!
