ボルダリングは、「ボルダー」と呼ばれる巨大な石っころを登って楽しむ、ロッククライミングのひとつのジャンルとしてはじまりました。山や河原、海岸などへ行くと、小型自動車からマイクロバス程度の大きな石が転がっていますよね。これらの巨石を英語で「ボルダー」と呼びます。それを自分の手足で登る遊びがボルダリングです。
