Apples are often eaten raw. Cultivars bred for raw consumption are termed dessert or [table apples](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_apple).

Apples are an important ingredient in many desserts, such as [apple pie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_pie), apple [crumble](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crumble), [apple crisp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_crisp) and [apple cake](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_cake). When cooked, some apple cultivars easily form a puree known as [apple sauce](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_sauce). Apples are also made into [apple butter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_butter) and apple jelly. They are often [baked](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baked) or [stewed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stewed) and are also (cooked) in some meat dishes. Dried apples can be eaten or reconstituted (soaked in water, alcohol or some other liquid).

Apples are milled or pressed to produce [apple juice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_juice), which may be drunk unfiltered (called [apple cider](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_cider) in North America), or filtered. Filtered juice is often concentrated and frozen, then reconstituted later and consumed. Apple juice can be [fermented](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermentation_\(food\)) to make [cider](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cider) (called hard cider in North America), [ciderkin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciderkin), and vinegar. Through [distillation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distillation), various alcoholic beverages can be produced, such as [applejack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Applejack_\(beverage\)), [Calvados](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvados_\(spirit\)), and [apfelwein](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apfelwein).
