**Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov** ([/ˈlɛərməntɔːf, -tɒf/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English);[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Lermontov#cite_note-1) [Russian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language): Михаи́л Ю́рьевич Ле́рмонтов; 15 October \[[O.S.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Style_and_New_Style_dates) 3 October\] 1814 – 27 July \[[O.S.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Style_and_New_Style_dates) 15 July\] 1841) was a Russian [Romantic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanticism) writer, poet and painter, sometimes called "the poet of the Caucasus", the most important Russian poet after [Alexander Pushkin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Pushkin)'s death in 1837 and the greatest figure in Russian [Romanticism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanticism). His influence on later [Russian literature](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_literature) is still felt in modern times, not only through his poetry, but also through his prose, which founded the tradition of the Russian [psychological novel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_novel).
