A fifteen second conversation from a different time can hint at a backstory. The way people fish can show years of culture. It can be vague and hard to interpret, and I’d still find it fascinating. Rewatching some of Gurren Lagan they do that a lot with Kamina’s dad. I love how Howl’s Moving Castle doesn’t need to explain the magic or the machines but it feels real. It adds to the mystery, allows the audience to find their own meaning, and makes the world seem bigger than just the one story.
