# Tiny Bytes: What happened to the seas?

I want to know what happened to the seas. The sea level has risen and their force is greater than we’ve seen before. Our cities have been moved back, artificial land is constantly created, we’ve built walls, and we’ve built cities under the water. Why is there so much trash? The water used to be blue and green and filled with life. Now so much of it is artificial. As the waves wash over you, so does the plastic bottles. Of course, there are little robots too. They are there to clean up the trash, act as plankton, or keep certain populations in check. We’ve also introduced new bacteria to break down the trash. Most of the creatures that live in the ocean wouldn’t be considered natural by 2010’s standards. Nearly all were designed, grown, or modified in labs. Such as the new algae and bacteria to break down plastic. We’ve also moved bacteria from other places in the world and tweaked. Many, many animals needed tweaking for survive. We constantly had to reintroduce species we’ve made extinct or modify them in some way to survive. Those we didn’t need to tweak have been tweaked none the less. After introducing gene-drives to modify the genome of some animals, at some point, those genes got free and affected large populations. Despite all of this the water is still one of the most beautiful parks of Earth. I wish I could have seen it when it was still clean. Thinking about this generated the idea: Any change to the world humans are able to deal with. We don’t necessarily have a good solution. Anyways good night, Lucas
