In a world dominated by centralized structures, my journey into the realms of EthFinance and Rocket Pool has been nothing short of a revelation. As a firm believer in the transformative power of decentralization, I have witnessed ethereum’s evolution since 2017 and the rising importance of staking from home, especially with more centralized actors getting involved into mass staking. I believe decentralization plays a massive role in shaping a more inclusive and resilient digital landscape.
I stumbled upon Bitcoin in 2013 and tried out mining BTC using gaming graphic cards. However, as hardware rapidly advanced, I struggled to keep up, and regrettably couldn't adapt. I didn't delve deeper into the cryptocurrency world and essentially forgot about it until the summer of 2017, when crypto reentered my life. As a fullstack developer, I quickly grasped and aligned with Ethereum's potential and envisioned its promising future.
Since then, I've been on the sidelines of this expansive community. I began using Reddit, initially finding my way to /r/ethtrader and later following the move to /r/ethfinance. Presently, I make a conscious effort to stay up to date with the network's developments daily, immersing myself in Discord and Twitter's cryptosphere.
I'm far from wealthy and allocate the majority of my income to cover living expenses. However, I've been consistently DCA’ing small amounts into Ethereum for years. Unfortunately, reaching the 32 ETH goal to solo stake was out of my financial reach.
Fortunately, through my engagement with /r/ethfinance and later, the EVMavericks community stemming from it, I came across Rocket Pool and discovered the option to contribute with 16 ETH minipools. This was still way above my holdings, so I decided to take the rETH liquid staking route, aiming to be at least a modest participant in the broader Ethereum staking network.
But time had finally come, Rocket Pool divided it’s minimum stake to 8 ETH minipools and I could at last start to think about diving in. At around the same moment, fiber optic internet made it’s, more than welcome, arrival into my small french town and @superphiz launched his #stakefromhome hashtag and photos of small, accessible setups started popping up all over my timeline.
No more excuses… I plunged into the Rocket Pool documentation (also received help and tips from their discord) and followed a few youtube videos, including this one that helped out loads :
Following a month of setting up and running the node on testnet, navigating through Linux, understanding updates, ensuring security, mastering commands, and navigating dashboards, everything was primed for action. The initial stages can be quite overwhelming, but as I took each small step, the cumulative progress became evident in the end. Mainnet here we come !!!
As mentioned earlier, I would never have embarked on this journey without the continuous, inspiring hard work of community members advocating for solo staking and the invaluable principles associated with decentralization. I’m so happy now and thank each and every one of them. My hope is that someone will read this and be encouraged to tread the same path, it’s really not that difficult !
