The origin of Father's Day, however, is rooted in history and tradition.  The idea of Father's Day was first proposed in the early 20th century. The credit for the inception of this day goes to Sonora Smart Dodd, who is considered the driving force behind the establishment of Father's Day. Sonora's father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised six children by himself. Inspired by the work of her father and the lack of a day to honor fathers, Sonora proposed the idea of having a special day to celebrate fathers, similar to Mother's Day, which was already a well-established holiday.  Sonora Smart Dodd initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, as the day for the celebration. However, due to logistical issues, the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington, was deferred to June 19, 1910. The idea gained popularity over the years, and various towns and cities across the United States began celebrating Father's Day.  Despite the initial enthusiasm, Father's Day did not become an official national holiday for many years. It was met with resistance and considered less important than Mother's Day. However, the movement to recognize Father's Day continued to grow, and its importance was acknowledged by various presidents. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law making Father's Day a permanent national holiday in the United States.  Today, Father's Day is celebrated worldwide, though the dates and customs may vary. In many countries, it is observed on the third Sunday in June, similar to the United States. It is a day when children express their love and appreciation for their fathers through gifts, cards, and various activities. The celebration acknowledges the contributions of fathers to their families and society, and it provides an opportunity for families to come together and honor the paternal figures in their lives.  In conclusion, Father's Day has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century, driven by the determination of Sonora Smart Dodd to recognize and celebrate the important role of fathers. Over time, it has evolved into a cherished holiday that honors the dedication and influence of fathers worldwide.
